River + Ranch Magazine
Branding, Logo, & Magazine Design System
Role: Brand Designer & Art Director (Concept, Brand Identity, Publication Design)
Industry: Lifestyle / Regional Publishing
-
River + Ranch Magazine launched as a high-quality regional publication focused on lifestyle, culture, landscape, and community rooted in the spirit of the Northern Plains. As a new title without precedent or visual language, the brand needed a cohesive identity that could set a distinct tone — one that felt authentic, elevated, and adaptable across print and web.
The challenge was to create:
A brand identity that reflected the ethos of the region
A logo and visual language with enduring personality
A publication design system capable of sustaining ongoing issues
Layouts that balanced editorial storytelling with compelling visual hierarchy
Cohesion across formats (print + digital)
-
I led the full branding and design execution of River + Ranch Magazine, including:
Brand exploration and identity development
Logo design and mark system
Typography and color systems
Cover and editorial layout templates
Photography integration and visual storytelling
Production files and print optimization
Ongoing design for each magazine issue
This was a ground-up brand build with long-term visual strategy at its core.

1. Defining the Brand Identity
River + Ranch needed a visual system that could embody its regional soul — open spaces, heritage, culture, and lifestyle — without feeling rustic or cliché. I developed a balanced brand language that was:
Refined but approachable
Modern yet rooted in tradition
Warm without losing professionalism
The logo reflects this balance with tailored letterforms, purposeful spacing, and a mark that feels timeless.
2. Creating a Flexible Visual System
Because the magazine would house diverse editorial content — profiles, features, landscapes, cultural essays — the layout system needed:
Strong typographic hierarchy
Grid structures that adapt to different story types
Flexible modules for photography, pull quotes, and sidebars
Clear pathways for reader navigation
3. Story-First Typography
Typography became a cornerstone of the design system — expressive in headline treatments yet clean and readable in body copy. The choices reinforce the magazine’s tone: articulate, grounded, and confident.
4. Photography Direction & Integration
Visual storytelling is essential in a lifestyle publication. I established photo styles and layouts that allow imagery to breathe, enhancing narrative without overpowering it.
5. Print-First Production Discipline
Magazine design demands precision — from gutter safety to color profiles, bleed management, and table of contents clarity. I ensured all layouts translated cleanly from screen mockups to high-quality print outcomes.
